The Arctic Tundra

What Is The Arctic Tundra? The Arctic Tundra is a large treeless zone found in snowy places around the Arctic Circle. There is another type of Tundra called the Alpine Tundra. This type of Tundra is usually in snowy peaks on mountains. The Arctic Tundra is known for its long stretches of plain land. The Finns used to call the tundra 'tunturi', but then later on the Russians developed the word 'tundra.'

PLANTS AT THE ARCTIC TUNDRA
Moss, grass, lichen and small shrubs thrive in the tundra. Some flowering plants are grow in the tundra because trees do not grow in the most of arctic. Most plants in arctic tundra are short and in a groups so that they do not blown over by the cold snowy winds.

THREATS TO THE ARCTIC TUNDRAOne of the biggest threats to the arctic tundra is Global Warming. Global warming is caused by city and boat fumes that can mix into air and water and it can also come from boat fumes. Eventually, the fumes will reach polar regions all around the world and melt the ice. This is how global warming is caused. Conservation groups like the Audubon Society and the Natural Heritage Programme prevent these things happening Another threat is hunting. Some people are so greedy they go all the way to the cold polar regions just to hunt polar bears and walruses. I think the same conservation groups for global warming help protect polar bears and walruses. Other people also do their bit by not buying polar bear or walrus made products.

Location
The arctic tundra is found in Russia and Canada. The arctic tundra is found in the northern most parts of the earth.
ANIMALS FROM THE ARCTIC TUNDRAOne of the keystone species from the arctic tundra is the caribou. A keystone species is an animal or plant that is very important to the ecosytem. Other plants and animals can not live without these animals. Every two years uge caribou herds migrate across the Arctic land. While these animals walk, they not only reshape the land but also play a huge role in the food chain. Well worn plants can drink water because of the reshaped ground for the water they drink get trapped in the holes the caribou make. Arctic foxes and polar bears are some of the main predators in the Tundra. They eat arctic hares and sometimes snowy owls. The vegetarians the predators eat arctic plants.
WEATHER AT THE TUNDRAThe tundra is one of the driest biomes in the Earth. There is very little rainfall in tundra. It rains less than ten inches a year. But its snows alot in the Tundra. The summer temperature is 10 degrees and winter temperature is -45 degrees(-50 degrees).
